I need to preface this post with the confession that I am not the most Christmassy person. It has taken me a number of years to really get into doing the Christmas celebration thing (I blame too many years working in retail!) and normally I’m the one putting up the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve (and taking it down in March!).
So when 2 Green Zebras asked if I wanted to have a play with some Christmas themed fabrics I was excited to find a collection that didn’t fall into the typical Christmas colour scheme, Makower Fabrics’ Modern Metallic!
Modern Metallic is exactly what it says it is. Modern, with a touch of metallic. And if there’s ever a time for metallic, it’s Christmas, right?
As I’ve just had a baby, and find it hard to say no to playing with pretty fabric, I decided to make a smaller project for Rose. When I’m making things for my kids now, I always try to think about what I would have loved to have as a child. I loved it when my Mum made things for me, and anything that makes a special occasion even ‘special-er’ is always a winner, so I decided to make Rose a Christmas-themed pillowslip. One that she will be excited to pull out at Christmas-time over the years to come to make the season just that bit more precious.
As luck would have it, when the bundle of fabric arrived my sewing room was in quite a state and some vintage linens I’d dyed with avocado skins happened to be flung on the top of a pile of junk I’d dumped on my sewing table (it was lucky they weren’t on the bottom!). I didn’t have any plans for the linen, and it was really just an experiment and something a bit different and fun to do. As I was looking at the Makower collection I happened to notice that the avocado dyed linen blended beautifully with it and would be a great contrast solid to mix in with the fat quarters I had received.
I had a (very rare) postpartum brainwave at this point and headed over to the Makower website to see if there were any free patterns I could play with. And, well, whaddya know, there’s one made specifically for Modern Metallics! I’m in love with scrappy styles at the moment, so I used the star from the quilt pattern and added whatever else I felt like adding at the time.
My favourite prints from this collection are most definitely the solids with the metallic dots. The scraps I have left will be so useful for not-Christmas-themed projects. And I really like the tree print on the grey background.
The colours from this collection work well with the colours around my home. Despite what you may be led to believe by my Insta feed, my house isn’t all flouncy and pretty. In my home I love a modern, neutral background (white walls, clean lines) with touches of colour and vintage pieces. My home is very much a work in progress still, because things cost money, and unfortunately I seem to have expensive taste. One day, when I’m about 80 I might be able to look around and feel like it’s finished 😉
So, Rose is happy with the pillow. The whole concept of Christmas in July is a bit beyond her as a 6-year old I think, because, well, where are the presents? So I think this project will be more appreciated in December when it’s time to start decorating the house. Before then I’ll have to make a few more bits and pieces to put around the home. And pillowslips for the other three… The to do list is long! As a new mum of four I’m learning that it’s all about ticking one thing off the list at a time. Mono-tasking. Which is near impossible with a newborn. Because they always want to be fed when it’s time to cook dinner and bath kids! Or when you’re trying to take photos (see photos below), or do anything that doesn’t involve feeding…
Modern Metallic by Makower is available instore now and can be purchased wholesale through 2 Green Zebras.
